Something I’m consciously exploring in Dream Life is the formal use of repetition and patterns in sequential art.

The last three pages, I’ve repeated three beats, two of Charlie running juxtaposed against the shower scene. For here this was about trying to play with the way time is sharp, and sometimes fractured early in the day and keep building interest in to what is otherwise going to be the establishing depiction of Carlie’s average working day.

Potentially dull stuff. But the idea is not to be dull. Using space ergonomically is a mantra in comics, and i don’t dispute the general wisdom. But one of the luxuries in doing something on my own like this is that i can do something potentially ‘unwise’.

Take a lot of time and space up when i want to, even if it’s for depictions of the mundane. That being said it’s just good storytelling to keep that depiction, attractive to read. Hence the lush trees on the previous page, the time spent on sparky here, the nuance and patterning.

Would like to add some music to this but have not had time to look for it. Things on the book progress, i have an intense workload for this weekend, but if i do good, i’ll be able to get the first edition to the show as planed. Wish me luck, final word on the books for TCAF will come with the next post. See you Wednesday.
